This dream itinerary, specially designed to follow the great migration, takes us to the heart of this majestically earthly event, the Mara River Crossing. The big focus of this safari will be on the Northern Serengeti, also known as Kogatende. The main feature of this area is the Mara River, where there is a good chance of witnessing the wildebeest crossing the river, mostly from August to October.
The Northern Serengeti is an interesting and varied country that is far from the park’s main entry point in the south, hence receiving fewer visitors.
Day 1
You will be picked up from the airport by our representative and taken to your accommodation in Arusha/Moshi, where you will spend the night, relax, and prepare in anticipation of the adventures to come.
Day 2
In the morning, you will be picked up from the lodge in Arusha by our safari driver guide. Start on transit drives to Ngorongoro Conservation area, on the way, you will see many Masai in their colourful dresses walking on the roadside, riding bicycles, herding cattle, and driving donkey carts.
Along the way we’ll pass through the mist-shrouded rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you might be lucky enough to see baboons, or even leopards and elephants in the dense undergrowth. Passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will be able to see the breath-taking Ngorongoro Crater before traveling onwards to the Serengeti National Park, which you will reach by midday. The Serengeti National Park is the largest park in Tanzania with diverse landscapes and habitats, such as grassy plains, swamps, lakes, savannah and mountains.
After an extensive game drive, you will drive to the accommodation where you will enjoy dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3
In the morning, we start our en route game drive to the Northern region of the Serengeti. Stretching from Seronera for about 100km, the Northern Serengeti is a gentle rolling countryside broken by small rivers, occasional hills, and kopjes. Here resides a multitudinous permanent population of wildlife, with very striking geological occurrences such as the beautiful Lobo Kopjes.
The migration is found in this area during August and, with your best luck, you may witness the most spectacular of river crossings as the herd attempts to cross the Mara River and avoid the strong currents and hungry crocodiles.
After a full day, followed by a drive to the accommodation, where you enjoy dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Today you will leave after breakfast and with a lunch packet, you will drive as you follow the migration paths depending on the location. Spend the day following the great migration of about 1.5 million wildebeests and 500,000 zebras migrating through the Serengeti Ecosystem. Dangers are everywhere and packs of lions, cheetahs, and other carnivores are everywhere waiting for the right moment to strike. Crocodiles in the Serengeti River have no mercy as the herds cross the river. Thousands are swept away by the arrogant waters, and the scenes are amazing.
Later in the early evening, you will drive for dinner and overnight.
Day 5
Wake up early in the morning with an early breakfast, then a half-day game drive along the Mara River, followed by an en route game drive to the Central Serengeti, before continuing to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for dinner and overnight on the Crater Rim.
Day 6
From the lodge drives to the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater was created when a large volcano exploded and collapsed in on itself two to three million years ago. The drive down into the Crater is an adventure in itself, and when you reach the Crater floor, you quickly find yourself amongst large numbers of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, and more than 500 bird species.
The Crater provides you with the best chance of seeing the endangered black rhino, which can sometimes be spotted in the open grasslands.
After lunch inside the Crater, head back to Arusha where you will arrive in the late afternoon.
